Spring Greening March 12, 2009

Yes, Spring is just around the corner and most of us are more than ready for some of the warmth and green it will bring!

There is no doubt GREEN is the hot topic these days, from our own households, to the White House, the message is clear, we need to be active in promoting our sustainable living style to help our environment.

We all know how  Spring becomes so GREEN … WATER…………you know the old saying, April showers, bring May flowers……..

Water is one of our most precious commodities and some statistics regarding our current water supply is startling!

  • 340 billion gallons of fresh water are withdrawn per day from rivers, streams and reservoirs to support residential, commercial, industrial, agricultural and recreational activities.
  • Annual water deficiency for the U.S. is 3,700 billion gallons.

  • Water consumption rose 6 fold in the last century-double the rate of our population.

  • Currently there are approximately 1.1 billion people worldwide who live without clean drinking water. (www.worldwatercouncil.org)

Many water conservation strategies involve no additional cost or rapid paybacks.

For example, here is a simple one you can implement chairside!

Remind your patients to “please” turn off the water while brushing their teeth!

Use enough water to moisten the toothbrush and fill a cup with water to rinse with after brushing.

 WHY…….they may ask you?

Studies have shown the average patient can waste 90 glasses of water while running the water while they are brushing their teeth (this does not apply to our “once a day, 30 second brushers!”) This equates to 27 billion glasses of water “down the drain” in the United States alone.

What is the message you are sending to your patients about your concern for the sustainability of our environment and for the environment your office provides to your patients?

Putting some GREEN in your office environment and in your marketing, may result in a positive increase in generating new clients and keeping your current client base impressed by your innovations and concern.

Are You An Environmental BIG FOOT? February 4, 2009

Look around your dental office and you may find that you already meet many of the prerequisites for owning  a green office!

Many dental offices have already made the transition to a paperless office, which is a big step (no pun intended) in reducing your ecological footprint as a business. Recent studies show that digital patient dental charting can save as much as 10,000 sheets of paper in a year. And don’t forget the cost of labor for filing, updating and pulling paper charts.

If your office has made the transition to digital radiographs, you have prevented the disposal of hundreds of liters of toxic radiographic fixer and thousands of lead foils, not to mention what you have done for your patient in reducing the level of exposure to radiation during radiographs.

If you are interested in shrinking your environmental BIG FOOT to a smaller scale, there are many professional resources at your disposal.

Remember, right now in most states it is still a business owner’s personal decision to become green and to decide what level of commitment the business is wiling to make to become a green business. But that may all change in the future.  Why not stay ahead of the curve? Assess your office today and see how big your environmental foot is?
